We the staff of St Patrick’s acknowledge the traditional owners, the Kulin nations, of the land on which we learn and play.

We pay respects to the Aboriginal Elders, past and present, who are our teachers.

We thank them for taking care of children and country for countless generations.

Mark 10:46-52

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

Master, grant that I may see.

As Jesus left Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (that is, the son of Timaeus), a blind beggar, was sitting at the side of the road. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and to say, ‘Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me.’ And many of them scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted all the louder, ‘Son of David, have pity on me.’ Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him here.’ So they called the blind man. ‘Courage,’ they said ‘get up; he is calling you.’ So throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus. Then Jesus spoke, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Rabbuni,’ the blind man said to him ‘Master, let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your faith has saved you.’ And immediately his sight returned and he followed him along the road.

Dear Parents, Carers and Guardians,

This week the Gospel tells us a healing story, the normal elements are present. Someone has a problem, there is some factor that complicates matters, Jesus effects the cure, the result is confirmed, and then there is some response to the miracle. Within this passage and elsewhere in Mark’s gospel, however, are indicators that he has other interests in mind. Bartimaeus was determined to get the attention of our Lord. He had faith that he could be healed.

And then, as we often see, the naysayers who want to shut down the lowly or the poor or unworthy; Jesus was right to proceed and find out what he needed to do. After all, this was his mission. And what of the people who told him to keep quiet? Who are they to determine who Jesus should attend to? What gives them that right? Why should they speak on behalf of others they know nothing about?

How often are we a naysayer? Sticking our nose in where it is not needed; forming opinions of others around us who are not worthy in our eyes? Maybe we should stick to our own agendas and try and see how we can be a change for good in this world…

Tomorrow, we celebrate World Teachers Day. This is the time that I wish to take the time to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all administration staff, my teachers and my Education Support Officers! Thank you for your valuable contribution to the students lives each and every day. Thank you for the care taken, the time spent and the persistence during the difficult times, reaching out to the students and giving them the best education possible. The students’ journey at St Patrick’s is not simply academic. ALL staff are involved with their social and emotional development, their spiritual guidance and we are in the privileged position to help these students become successful, confident and respectable citizens that will continue to contribute to our community.

If you have the opportunity to see your children’s teacher, either today or tomorrow, or any time really, please take the opportunity to say THANK YOU for the work they do and all the unseen things that happen each and every day to ensure your child is safe and happy!

An enormous THANK YOU to Tresa Andrews for her commitment to the Year 6 students making their Sacrament of Confirmation. Her dedication to our students is admirable and the celebration itself went so smoothly and was such a wonderful example of how we can make these things special when we all work together for the sake of our students!

We have had three Foundation transitions so far this year with 2 more to go. Our new parents and their children are so excited as they prepare for their first year of schooling! The parents have come and spent time with myself and learning more about out St Patrick’s community. I am pleased to announce that Geraldine Wilmann and Katherine Gronek will once again take the reigns of being our Foundation teachers for 2025. Thank you also to Yoke Yee Teow, my EAL teacher, Angharad Doran, my Learning Adjustment leader and Kelly Wilson, my MHiPS leader (Mental Health) for supporting the students and teachers during their transition.

I will be announcing the remainder of the staffing in the next few weeks. This year, we will be doing our transition differently so the students will have more than just one opportunity to meet and mix with the teachers for their new year level, as well as the other students they may not know as well. We hope this will lead to a smooth beginning next year and alleviate any concerns around the new school year.

God Bless

Meg

I am asking please that all students, in particular our Senior school, to be wearing our proper School Uniform this final term. It is important that we still maintain a high standard of uniform and not use Term 4 as an excuse to become complacent about what we wear to school.

I will continue to ask all students to be wearing proper school shoes and uniform right up until the end of the year. I understand that students are growing constantly, however they will continue to grow for many more years and so I cannot always accept this as an excuse. We must remember that many students are adhering to the correct standards of school uniform and therefore, it is important that the students and their families please respect this. Secondary schools do not accept poor uniform standards.

If finance is a concern when it comes to uniform, please speak to your classroom teacher. St Patrick’s has a very good second-hand uniform shop that you can top up your child’s uniform with. It is a third of the price you would pay at the normal uniform shop, and the money goes straight back to the school.

We have had another terrific week of supporting each other to be the best versions of ourselves. In the wellbeing room a quiet space is offered to reflect or chat, depending on what each person needs. A wide range of sensory activities is also on offer for those students needing to regulate their behaviour or feel calmer.

It is a place where everyone belongs, our feelings are valued, and problems are solved.

The Wellbeing room and sensory garden will be in full swing again this term. It is open before and after school for pop in chats. We also run sessions at recess and lunch Monday to Wednesdays.

If you can help, I am looking for thick balls of wool to be donated this term. We are learning to hand knit, a powerful mindfulness skill. I’d be grateful for any donation.

We have exciting news to finally share. As of next year, we will have another Wellbeing member on board here at St Patricks. Very soon everyone will be able to meet Miss Zahli. She is a trained Therapy Dog and will be coming along to share in the fun, learning and wellbeing at school.

For the remainder of this term, Zahli will be visiting each Friday of about ½ hour. During these visits Zahli will be walking through the school with her handler, Kelly Wilson. It is a time to just wave to Zahli from a distance as she gets used to her surroundings a little bit at a time. This way everyone can learn to feel comfortable with Zahli too. Zahli is very excited!

Have a wonderful term, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need too.

With gratitude,

Kelly Wilson.

Student Write Ups

Malika 4JD

On Thursday morning we went to an African drumming incursion. I met two people one was playing a drum called Jembe and the other one was playing a drum called Dun dun. He had another two called kenkeni djembé.  I felt the happiest. When they taught me these cool beats I was vibing. I can't wait for our next incursion.

Amelie 4JD

The African Drumming Incursion was a really fun experience for me because I love to learn about other people’s countries and nationalities.I love music and making it about African music made it even better. It was so fun that I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t smiling.

The drumming was so unique and different from any other drummers that I have seen. They were so kind and tried to make us sing more louder. We even got to dance in front of everyone and we all so happy.Even though it was about drumming we got to dance and sing!

This was a really fun experience and just picture a nice, peaceful classroom,it felt more like a concert.

I had the time of my life and I really hope that other schools get to experience it.

Charlotte 4JD

Imagine a quiet and peaceful classroom, now think of the opposite. That's what it felt and sounded like inside this room.

Firstly, we left our classroom and headed over to the room. We passed the other year four class on the way there. Everybody entered and took a seat, some people were moved to fill in the spaces. Then they started by introducing themselves and what the drums were called, I can only remember one of the drums names it was boom boom. We pulled out our drums from under our seats, we were told to tilt them but if you couldn't you just stand it up.

Then, we started with a warm up (which was drumming), “bang, bang, boom, boom” you could barely hear the person next to you! I’ve never done African drumming so my hands were red and itchy, like when you get bitten by a mosquito. But that wasn't the end, we only just finished the warm up!

After, we started the main part the man would do a beat like “boom bang bang boom” and we would have to copy the beat. He would make us do it a couple of times then we would do a new one. We had to put them all together. It sounded amazing. After he picked two people to dance in front of everybody. First it was Aden and Deng, Then it was Liam and Mpho, Then all the girls, After it was Mitch and Dylan, and finally it was Lucas, Ethan and Devid. Later we all had to get up and repeat his dance it was stomping, then clapping, then hands in the air, turning around, running on the spot, then jump twice and do your own dance.

Finally, we got showed the cloke he was wearing, and we grabbed our drum and took it to their van. It was so fun I really enjoyed it, I recommend it to people that haven't done it before.

Faith 4AT

Today at 9:00 we went to african drumming .Then they introduced us to them and the drums we were using the djembe while one of them was using dundun. Now the drums had their own personal names I can't remember. After that we did our warmup which was long in my opinion but fun we got to learn some fun  techniques.then we started drumming and learning how much beats we were doing it went like. One two three four five six seven .one two three four five six seven one two three one two three  one two clap .play your friends drum one two three four then switch one two three four .swim dadadadada  swim dadadada i can't remember the rest but at end we put our hands up and said africa. After the drumming they made us stand up and dance it went like stomp .clap.put your hands up.and turn then we asked some questions about africa then we left?

Harry 4AT

African drumming was so fun and amazing. I loved the sounds and music that me and 4AT did together.

The drums that we all used were called djembe.

The other african drums we did not use are called walking drum, balafon, kpanlogo, bougarabou, bata and so much more african drums.

When we first started, I had the urge to go to africa.

The other things we did were dancing, singing, screaming out “AFRICA!”

And we also did freestyle dance.

African drumming is really fun and exciting and I would do it again.

But I'm lucky my sister has an African drum in her room, that way I can keep drumming and not stop.

I think everyone around the world should be recommended for this satisfaction.

Evie Mu 4AT

Today we went to African drumming and it was so fun! We got to play a drum called a djembe. The people teaching us were really good at playing it. There was a different motion when playing it like the swimming motion but also that bit was very hard learning how to do it.it was so fun  cause we got to learn how to hold the drum and how to play the drum.after that we got to dance some people were embarrassed because people would be staring at them dancing.also we got to dance together and sing together we also got to freestyle!

Scarlett

They chose some of us to dance while the others were drumming.

They told us to do some hand motions on the drums like swimming.

There were different types of drums like sabar.

We were singing while drumming as well and at the end we all did our own dance moves. I was dancing with miss jamieson, srina and selina came to join me,miss jamieson and srina.

At the end we got to ask questions about the drums and africa.

Patrick

When we went to the African drumming incursion  we had two awesome drummers who showed us how to drum. The African drums are called djembe, the top is made out of goat skin.

When our awesome drummers asked who was the best dancer, everyone pointed to Elijah and Lucas. They danced and we drummed. When It was Question time I asked what their favorite place in Africa was? One of them said Timbuck two.I loved African drumming!
